Giant Citystorm Bicycle

Giant, the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world, challenged UK interior, industrial and product designer Michael Young to create a fresh concept for two-wheeled transport to anticipate the needs of savvy city lifestyle consumers. 'The starting point of the project was to study bicycles that riders we considered not to be sportsmen chose to ride in cities', Young explains. ‘We looked at the basic frame constructions and attributes, and then made a study of what we could do not only to make a more functional city bike but also one that could be emotionally compelling and communicate to consumers who might demand a more fashion or design-related option'. Four aspects of Citystorm distinguish it from other city bicycles: integrated design elements, the touch points, its functionality and of course the Michael Young design flavor. The Lock – The wire on the lock is made of Kevlar, the same material that is utilized on bullet-proof vests, and steel wire that ensures the wire is rigid enough to avoid being cut. The lock is housed inside the tube frame and can be easily pulled out and latched, either as the primary security system or for quick-stop theft prevention. The Headlight – The neat headlight is a result of Giant's advanced hydro forming technology. Hydro forming, or ‘fluid forming', encases the regular aluminum tube in a desired shape mould. With the injection of high-pressure liquid, the tube is then pressed into a new shape. The benefit is a smooth, new shaped tube which is stronger and better reinforced. The battery holder for the headlight is hidden within the tube frame and slips out for quick replacement when needed. Antropomorfo (Human Form) Chairs

"Antropomorfo Chairs" is a serie of chairs developed combining forms inspired from childrens drawings obviously out of proportions, with materials, colours and details typical from the scandnavian tradition. A childrens drawing is extremely free. Interesting it is studying and understanding this spontanious expression in a three-dimensional way, translating this language in to a furniture. Natural and living materials is giving life to these personages between human and form. Oak, beech and walnut are combined with various joints inspired from classic wood furniture. The colours of the different wood draw on the surface lines and circles, defining a geometric structural signification. Rope and leather are applied on the wooden structures with traditional working methods, composing the sit. The big upholstered backs of the chairs covered in natural woolfelt are protecting the smaller elements and so their internal values. This overdimensioned element catch a great attention, but in the same time brings completely out of ballance all other elements; so renders the small details even smaller, though giving them even greater importance and a sence of irony.

Chalayan's 07/08 High-tech Winter Collection

Belching steam across the catwalk, the volcanic eruptions from a hole in Hussein Chalayan's runway presaged airborne drama. As the wild winds blew, the designer created an extraordinary melange of high- tech protection clothes and layered dresses so light that they rose like racing clouds across the models' bodies. The designer referred to his high-tech protective wear as "winter relief components." They included an eerily glowing hat, designed to emit light in the dark winter; front panels like aprons from the International Space Station on fresh blue-and-white striped dresses; and an electronic hood rising from the nape like a wave. In this unique work with Swarovski using LEDs (light-emitting diodes), Chalayan based his collection on the four seasons. That produced a beautiful dress expressing the rites of spring, displayed as an abstract film that flickered on the body, as if on a television screen.Designer: Hussein Chalayan in collaboration with Moritz Waldemeyer

Researchers from Ritsumeikan University and the Shiga University of Medical Science have developed a miniature robot prototype that is controlled remotely once placed inside the body via an incision (whew! not a suppository) at the affected area. Unlike existing swallowable robots that can only snap pictures and gather info, this minibot is maneuvered by controlling external magnetic fields located close to the patient, and can perform medical treatments that may, in some cases, negate the need for surgery. As of now, the researchers have experimented with 5 different variations of the device to test functions like capturing images, taking tissue samples (see creepy forceps above), and administering medicines. The robot is positioned and guided using an MRI of the patient taken pre-surgery, and an attached mini-cable relays stats and images back to a computer during the procedure. The robot is composed of plastic and measures at 0.8-inches in length and 0.4-inches in diameter, which, by all means, doesn't seem that tiny when you picture it crawling around inside of you. Supposedly, this little guy has tested well with animals, so we humans may be next in line.
