Everyday objects reimagined

This Swiss design firm challenged designers to repurpose everyday objects in imaginative ways -- like this tennis-ball earmuff. There are some really great results there, from a greenhouse built out of transparent CD jewel cases to fake fingernails made out of postage stamps. Link (Thanks, Bernhard!)

Horizontal Bi-Fold Door System

Fold up glass wall system... creates its own canopy too!Funny that I just happened to run across this manufacturer of horizontal bi-fold doors on the Archinect forum since I was thinking about utilizing such a system for a project I am currently designing. Frank Jonkman & Sons is a manufacturer of greenhouse systems, but as they mention on their website, this horizontal bi-fold door system has amazing potential beyond greenhouse applications. The benefits of the system, other than the "cool" factor:
Requires no extra space within the adjacent walls for storing open panels
No track or threshold required at ground level
It can be easily installed in new or existing buildings
It is available in any width or height and the panels may combine virtually any combination of glazing materials

Arrivederci Vico

The great Vico Magistretti left us yesterday. He was considered one of the most representative protagonists of Italian Design and one of the most prolific; during his extensive career he designed more than 800 products for many important Italian companies; De Padova, Artemide, Kartell and Cassina among many others. His creative process followed a precise executive and functional concept, which endowed the object with its distinctive character. For Magistretti design was an intellectual activity always tempered by reality. I had the opportunity to meet him several times, he was a charming person, pure energy. It makes me happy to think I will find him again in each of his magnificent objects, simple, elegant, intelligent, just as the man who conceived them. Thanks Vico! GP

Nokia’s Image Cable Bluetooth Headset

The affectionately named HS-13W Wireless Image Headset from Nokia would rank pretty high on our wishlist this Holiday season, if it weren’t for the price. At least, we think the ladies in our lives might like it. It’s a Bluetooth headset, but not the kind that hangs from your ear and makes you look like a tard. Instead, it hangs down your neck, like, well… like a necklace. This particular device simply does away with the wires (at least, the ones connecting to your cell), and includes a 128 x 128-pixel 4,096-color display. That way, you can see who’s calling without having to fish around for your phone. The display also allows you to interact with your mobile and, say, browse and edit your contacts. You can also store up to 500KB worth of pictures.
We’re a little disappointed that it doesn’t seem to support audio streaming, which would have made it an ideal companion to any musicphone. And, $300 is a lot of money for something that isn’t, say, a truck full of delicious donuts.

TrueUtility Puts A Flashlight On Your Keys

Sadly, this is probably one of those products you’ll find stacked, 50 to a box right next to the cash register at a dollar store somewhere. It’s sad, we say, because it’s a relatively ingenious little thing. It’s the LockLite, from TrueUtility, and it’s simply a little LED light affixable to a key of your choosing. To us, it seems like an indispensable tool when you’re trying to come home after a night of drinking with the buddies and you don’t want to wake the missus by repeatedly striking the door everywhere except in the keyhole. Of course, we don’t exactly advocate committed relationships, because they inevitably strip you from your God-given right to kick your liver a little closer to death everyday, but, well, we’re not going to tell you how to run your life.
We’re not sure just how much these cost, and whether or not they’re being commercialized yet. The company invites prospective vendors to inquire about samples, so we’re guessing they’re out there.

via:we-make-money-not-art

可调节量杯

老外的厨房总是充满着物理和化学,这(adjustable measuring cups)是一个把手式量杯,而且是可以调节的。同时适合固体和液体,而且是带有磁性的,方便挂在各个触手可及的地方。(via:gizmodo)

Top 19 Tips To Get The Most From Your Nokia N91

A few weeks ago, I posted my review for the Nokia N91, a music playing smartphone with a 4GB hard drive. I had concluded that as a music player, the N91 worked great, but as a smartphone, it fell a few steps short of perfection due to a few software issues. It was still fundamentally a good phone, but a little rough around the edges: with 4GBs to handle, some of the applications and features that worked flawlessly on models with smaller memory were choking a little on all those bytes.
Well, some time has passed, and things are looking a lot better. For one, there’s been a firmware upgrade (which I’ve installed) and I’m happy to report that things are running much more smoothly… though not completely flawlessly. I’d have to upgrade my smartphone rating to 8.5/10, up from a 7. And, there’s been lots of discussion here and there about ways of making the most out of the device. So, after the jump, I present to you a rather exhaustive list of tips that should allow you to squeeze all the juice out of the N91. If you’ve dropped the cash on this phone, it might be worth it to take a look or two.

The Treetents

If displaying your affection for trees involves extended periods of close contact, then perhaps we can interest you in some Treetents: tents for the eco-warrior.
They are not exactly being marketed at all. They are rather a seven year old art piece by Dutch designer Dré Wapenaar, currently on display at the MoMA for a show called
SAFE: Design Takes On Risk.
The Treetent is made of steel, canvas and plywood and measures 15 feet high by nearly 9 feet in diameter.
And, if you chose to make your ecological stand a family affair, know they are quite roomy: you could all fit inside in comfort.

pendant lamp

Protea is a pendant lamp that is "thermo tropic" in plant terms (it moves away from heat). In a closed state (i.e. the light is off), the shade is cold and hugs the bulb closely. When the lamp is turned on, the petals move away from the hot bulb. It is a lot of work keeping cool, so they like it when you blow on them.
