Move Over Tonka

Tipper trucks haven’t change much in the last century so designer Haishan Deng took it upon himself to create the Super Tipper Truck. Current tipper trucks can only unload their cargo one way. This usually requires the driver to maneuver ever so carefully. With the Super Tipper, door access on all four sides allow it to dump its junk in any direction.
Of course it wouldn’t be an improved construction vehicle without more power and the Super Tipper leaves non disappointed. Each set of wheels has its own motor and independent suspension - you know, for those awkward incline angles.
I can’t wait for the UltraMega Tipper Truck!

The Bionic Chameleon Truck

Nature didn’t make many mistakes with organic forms and wise designers like Haishang Deng understand solves for our problems can often be found just by studying what nature has already done. Enter the Chameleon Truck.
This bionic cargo transport uses an innovative segmented body remarkably like that of a centipede. This enables the truck to adjust its size to the cargo load. The resilient soft tarpaulin shelled body is strong enough to protect its cargo but also absorbs impacts in case of accidents. As an added benefit fuel savings abound since the truck’s weight is slashed in half.
Another innovative design feature is the drive cockpit which cranes over its cargo instead of being built into the frame like most vehicles today. This enables automated front loading without the need for additional support.

Giant Citystorm Bicycle

Giant, the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world, challenged UK interior, industrial and product designer Michael Young to create a fresh concept for two-wheeled transport to anticipate the needs of savvy city lifestyle consumers. 'The starting point of the project was to study bicycles that riders we considered not to be sportsmen chose to ride in cities', Young explains. ‘We looked at the basic frame constructions and attributes, and then made a study of what we could do not only to make a more functional city bike but also one that could be emotionally compelling and communicate to consumers who might demand a more fashion or design-related option'. Four aspects of Citystorm distinguish it from other city bicycles: integrated design elements, the touch points, its functionality and of course the Michael Young design flavor. The Lock – The wire on the lock is made of Kevlar, the same material that is utilized on bullet-proof vests, and steel wire that ensures the wire is rigid enough to avoid being cut. The lock is housed inside the tube frame and can be easily pulled out and latched, either as the primary security system or for quick-stop theft prevention. The Headlight – The neat headlight is a result of Giant's advanced hydro forming technology. Hydro forming, or ‘fluid forming', encases the regular aluminum tube in a desired shape mould. With the injection of high-pressure liquid, the tube is then pressed into a new shape. The benefit is a smooth, new shaped tube which is stronger and better reinforced. The battery holder for the headlight is hidden within the tube frame and slips out for quick replacement when needed.

THE ALGAE-FILLED HUMMER O2

Wouldn’t it be great if all the nasty gas-guzzling Hummers of the world could be replaced by a clean green vehicle that produces oxygen and is completely recyclable? If General Motors is able to realize its utopian Hummer O2 design, we may actually see something like this in the near future. GM just won the Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge with a creative algae-fueled design for a green concept car.

GM beat out top electric car front runners, including Toyota and Honda, with their design of the Hummer O2. The contest challenged top automakers to design a vehicle that could be fully recycled after reaching the end of a five-year life span. The winning design from GM for their version of the Hummer O2 is powered by hydrogen tank and fuel cells. What sets the Hummer O2 apart is its algae-filled body shell that not only creates oxygen, but opens up like a flower to the afternoon sun to catch sunlight while it’s parked. While I’m not sure how much of a theft deterrent a wide open car proves to be, the innovative thinking behind the Hummer O2 is just a clip of what the future in automobiles hold for us.
GM also announced that the next three years would bring biofuel engine options to their entire Hummer lineup.

Wooden Scooter by Groovy

Tel Aviv-based design firm and retro-collector Groovy releases their new Wooden Scooter made from reclaimed materials such as palettes and crates. The premise is to prove that retro flair can be communicated through visual association. For example, this piece resembles a classic Vespa. Groovy suggests this mode of transportation as a fun, ecological, and cost-effective way to scoot about town.
