Everyday objects reimagined

This Swiss design firm challenged designers to repurpose everyday objects in imaginative ways -- like this tennis-ball earmuff. There are some really great results there, from a greenhouse built out of transparent CD jewel cases to fake fingernails made out of postage stamps. Link (Thanks, Bernhard!)

Florent Lasbleiz’s

+ Florent Lasbleiz’s Angelique coffee table not only looks like dominos but can be arranged like them too. His Lit de Camille bed is modular and multifunctional. WARNING: website contains mind-numbing navigation (and I speak french).

Horizontal Bi-Fold Door System

Fold up glass wall system... creates its own canopy too!Funny that I just happened to run across this manufacturer of horizontal bi-fold doors on the Archinect forum since I was thinking about utilizing such a system for a project I am currently designing. Frank Jonkman & Sons is a manufacturer of greenhouse systems, but as they mention on their website, this horizontal bi-fold door system has amazing potential beyond greenhouse applications. The benefits of the system, other than the "cool" factor:
Requires no extra space within the adjacent walls for storing open panels
No track or threshold required at ground level
It can be easily installed in new or existing buildings
It is available in any width or height and the panels may combine virtually any combination of glazing materials

Arrivederci Vico

The great Vico Magistretti left us yesterday. He was considered one of the most representative protagonists of Italian Design and one of the most prolific; during his extensive career he designed more than 800 products for many important Italian companies; De Padova, Artemide, Kartell and Cassina among many others. His creative process followed a precise executive and functional concept, which endowed the object with its distinctive character. For Magistretti design was an intellectual activity always tempered by reality. I had the opportunity to meet him several times, he was a charming person, pure energy. It makes me happy to think I will find him again in each of his magnificent objects, simple, elegant, intelligent, just as the man who conceived them. Thanks Vico! GP
